A popular Bethlehem Township pharmacy has shut its doors, telling patrons to go to CVS down the street to fill prescriptions.
Young’s Pharmacy, a family-owned, independent business in existence since 1976 at 3708 Freemansburg Ave., closed Tuesday. It was open for business Monday. Its reasoning is unclear with multiple phone calls and messages not returned from owner Jeanette Young.
Employee Karen Kozul Figueroa, who’s worked at Young’s since December 1993, posted on Facebook “hearts were broken” over the decision.
“From management down to every employee, it was my escape from the issues in my everyday life …,” she said, noting she loved every minute of her employment and called colleagues and the customers her “family.“
“… I hope and pray that I can find another place of employment like the family I had to leave,” she added.
A sign on the building Tuesday stated, “This pharmacy has closed. You may visit any CVS pharmacy location to fill your next prescription.” A recording on the pharmacy’s voicemail stated the same.
Lights were on inside the business Tuesday afternoon with what appeared to be workers moving merchandise around. One by one patrons pulled into the parking lot, went to try to open the locked door and peered at the sign in disbelief.
“You want to support small businesses,” said Nancy Murphy of Bethlehem Township, a Young’s patron since 2004.
Chris Bauder a Bethlehem Township resident who’s patronized the business for three decades, said it was the place where the employees knew patrons by name and customers could run in and out for something quick. The pharmacy also sold toys, gift items, home decor, snacks and candy.
“I’ll miss it. I hope they reopen,” Bauder said. “It’s sort of sad.”
Bill Fahs, also from Bethlehem Township, said he’ll miss the employees most.
“I liked the people,” he said, noting he’s been a customer since he built his house 44 years ago.
There was no announcement on Young’s Pharmacy’s Facebook page with a link to a blog about cholesterol being the most recent post Tuesday afternoon. Another sign hung on an inside door of the pharmacy, wishing patrons well in 2019.
“From all of us at Young’s Pharmacy, blessings for a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. Thank you for your continued patronage,” it said.
